Rail Overpass To Become Outdoor Eating Venue

Aria Property Group has submitted a development application to turn space located below a South Brisbane railway overpass into a new urban park it calls Fish Lane Town Square.

News picture.

The development is the next stage of Aria’s revitalisation of Fish Ln, which involves the establishment of a new urban park, outdoor dining areas, and retail, dining, bar and gallery tenancies, as well as a unit tower.

Aria used the urban park to secure a favourable “performance outcome’’ from Council, which resulted in it being granted an extra 11 storeys above the local limit in the neighbourhood plan.

Local lobby group, Kurilpa Futures, criticised Council’s decision at the time.

The square, designed by Richards Spence, creator of the Calile Hotel in James St, Fortitude Valley, as well as urban design firm RPS Group, said the project aimed to enhance the vibrancy of Fish Ln.

The first stage, covered by the new DA, included planters with integrated seating, deep planting and turfed areas, informal seating and “gathering’’ spaces.

Three pedestrian links would connect Fish Ln and Melbourne Street.

There would be cafes, outdoor eating and a new restaurant in a Melbourne St building known as Quinn House.
